KUALA LUMPUR: “Tidak pernah dalam sejarah Umno kita membelakangkan pemimpin lepas yang telah berjasa kepada parti dan negara, tidak kira siapa mereka.”
Demikian kata setiausaha agung parti itu Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad mengenai khabar angin bahawa Umno tidak mahu Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad dijemput pada majlis sambutan Kemerdekaan ke-50 akhir bulan ini.
Sambil bersungguh-sungguh menyangkal khabar angin itu beliau berkata telah menjadi budaya di dalam Umno sentiasa menghormati dan mengenang jasa pemipin yang lalu, termasuk pemimpin yang pernah meninggalkan parti.
“Tidak ada sebarang sebab mengapa beliau (Dr Mahathir) tidak perlu dijemput. Mengapa pula kita tidak mahu menjemputnya?” tegas Radzi selepas melancarkan buku “Lilin Membakar Diri” mengenai perjuangan politik bapa dan datuk kepada Perdana Menteri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Buku yang ditulis Dharmala NS itu mengkisahkah perjuangan lebih satu dekad Allahyarham Ahmad Badawi dalam Pergerakan Pemuda Umno bersama-sama Allahyarham Tun Sardon Jubir serta pembabitan tidak langsung Allahyarham Abdullah Fahim dalam gerakan nasionalisme Tanah Melayu sebelum merdeka.
Radzi berkata demikian sebagai mengulas khabar angin yang kini disebarkan oleh golongan tertentu kononnya wujud usaha di kalangan pemimpin Umno yang cuba mempengaruhi kerajaan agar tidak menjemput bekas perdana menteri itu kerana tindakannya yang berterusan mengkritik kepimpinan negara hari ini.
Menurut Radzi, Umno adalah sebuah parti yang sentiasa menghargai sumbangan dan jasa pemimpin-pemimpin lepas tanpa mengambil kira tindak-tanduk mereka selepas melepaskan jawatan.
Mengambil contoh Allahyarham Datuk Onn Jaafar, Radzi berkata, walaupun beliau pernah keluar dari Umno, jasanya sebagai pengasas parti itu sentiasa dikenang.
“Kita tidak pernah lupa pemimpin lepas. Itulah sebenarnya kekuatan Umno sebagai sebuah parti,” katanya.
Mengenai perjuangan golongan muda dalam Umno, Radzi menasihatkan mereka agar tidak terlalu ghairah menonjolkan diri sebaliknya mencontohi pemimpin lepas seperti Allahyarham Ahmad Badawi yang lebih mementingkan perjuangan daripada ingin menjadi popular.
“Sudah sampai masanya kita mengingatkan pemipin muda kita mengenai pengorbanan pemimpin lepas agar boleh menjadi pengajran untuk dikuti oleh mereka,” katanya.
